As the score suggests defence was the order of the day with both sides cancelling each other out. Newark were the visitors to the Memorial Ground at the weekend with only one point seperating the teams in the table and it was the visitors who settled first with some probing runs from their young but eager backs being repelled by the hosts defence. Coalville weathered the storm to gain momentum of their own. winning 75% of possession in the scrums. From one of these set pieces on Newark`s 5 meter line, the ball shot out on the visitor's side and Joe Rumming reacted first to score the try with Billy Savory adding the extra`s for Coalville to lead 7 nil with half an hour gone. Chance`s for both sides came and went but neither team could break down their opponents resolve. Into the second period, defences remained on top. A couple of missed penalties on 50 and 65 minutes for the home team were the closest they got to adding to their half time score. The visitors did get on the scoreboard though with a penalty after Liam Nelson was yellow carded for going in on the wrong side. With time almost up Newark threw caution to the wind and pressed forward for a try to win the game. Again, gallant defence from the home side kept them at bay until the final whistle. Unfortunately for try scorer and captain Rumming's it ended with a broken jaw. Coalville`s head coach said afterwards "very important win for us today. We ground out the result which was important and a learning curve. we have areas we need to address but we`re making good progress".
