By Joe Moretta
A strong start is all Coalville take from first game of 2019
Coalville started the new year with a trip down to Corby were they met a S&L side that had only lost once at home this season. The Memorial ground side were without five regular first team players due to injuries and unevailabilities so in came colts Tom Richards
and Ollie James
both on the bench,Joel Pennington
and Josh Breen
on the wings and Wes Syed
in at scrum half.
Coalville were playing down the slope first half in good conditions if some what cold.First blood went to the visitors as Shane Upton-Burton
broke the gain line on his own 22 and released Michael Richmond
,whose run took him to the hosts 5 metre line, the offload was perfect as Eddie Rotstein was on hand to cross the whitewash,Wes Syed
added the extra 2 points with barely 2mins on the clock. On ten mins though Coalville were down a man as Liam Nelson
in making a try saving tackle was deemed to have killed the ball and was yellow carded. The home side with the extra man took control pinning Coalville back, bombbarding the line until on 17mins the defence cracked allowing the converted try 7-7.With both sides looking for openings tempers flared as stoppage after stoppage ruined any continuity of play resulting in many lectures from the referee. The home side finally broke the deadlock with another converted try 7 mins into time added on.Half time score 14-7 to the hosts.
The second period mirrored the previous one with many interventions by the refs whistle, and penalties galore and from one of these Coalville reduced the arrears as Wes Syed
slotted over the kick 14-10.On the hour another yellow for Coalville this time Will Quail
the one to spend 10 mins in the sin bin.Stewarts&Lloyds 3rd try came shortly after followed by a penalty to put the hosts 12points to the good. The final 10 mins saw the visitors have a try disallowed and two knock ons with try line beckoning halting what would have been a remarkable come back.In the final minute the home team also had a player sin binned.
Coalville are at home this saturday when Leicestershire team Belgrave are the vistors ko 2.15pm.
