Following on from their win against Kenilworth last week, Coalville Ladies squad headed to Longton for their first away game of the season. On a very hot day it was a difficult game for Coalville with Longton’s physicality in the back line proving the difference. Longton came straight out of the blocks and scored a couple of tries very quickly with strong running from their back row and centres. Towards the end of the first half, Longton were camped on Coalville’s line but the defence held strong with a crucial turnovers preventing Longton from adding to their score before halftime.
After switching positions up at the half time break, Coalville looked stronger in the second half and despite giving away a soft try, they proved strong in defence and made some hard yards. After a series of penalties, Coalville took advantage: the forwards making steady metres before quick hands in the backs resulted in Alice Birr going over for her first try for the senior team. Coalville kept the pressure on and came close to scoring twice but unfortunately it wasn’t meant to be with the final score 27-5.
Overall there was some strong work from the forwards, epitomised by forward of the match Jasmine 'Jip' Heard who made some strong carries. From the backs, Emily 'Pank' Piancastelli stood out, dealing with the pressure of Longton and clearing from her own line very effectively. Coalville now look forwards to their next game at home on the 2nd October against Coventry Welsh.
