Coalville beat Cannock 29-0

Coalville Ladies looked to bounce back from their away defeat at Kenilworth against Cannock away from home on Sunday. It was a warm sunny afternoon that saw kick-off being delayed, but this did nothing to affect Coalville’s desire to play running rugby. From the kick-off Coalville played up-hill with expansive play from both the backs and forwards. This pressure was converted when forward of the match Alysia ‘Bob’ Hunt took a ball from the scrum-half and went straight through a gap to score just to the right of the posts. Captain Jenny Renton converted. Coalville never let the pressure up and after some side-to-side play, winger Beth Hillier went over in the left-hand corner to make the lead at half-time 12-0.

The second half saw Coalville playing downhill and continuing in the same theme. Every time Cannock came forwards they were met with a resilient defence, crunching tackles and hard work in the rucks meaning Renton could permanently keep them pinned down in their half. Back in the opposition’s 22 and after a maul from the lineout, fullback and back of the match, Magali Ducreux came in to part the defence and go over under the posts, Renton again converted. Shortly after flanker Alice Birr added to the score with a try of her own.
Some brilliant interplay between scrum half, Sheree Wright, Renton and Birr lead to Wright scoring Coalville’s fifth try of the afternoon. Relentless in attack and unwavering in defence, the score finished 29-0. Coalville now look to their last game of the season at home against Dudley Kingwinsford, a win at home potentially securing second place in the league.
