Defence dominates in weather affected game

Coalville travelled to Newark last saturday in Midlands 2 East(North) for their second league game of the season where a close game was anticipated from recent results between the two sides.Ben Toft the Memorial grounds head coach was forced to make several changes due to injuries from the opening game,Ash Lynds,Zak Fellows,Liam Nelson,Joe Rummings,Jack Tointon,Joe Moretta,Chris Flanagan & Joel Wallace all in the squad for the kick off.
Newark had the elements behind them as the heavens opened resembling a monsoon at the start.Early pressure from the hosts pegged the visitors back with some good kicking by Cox the home fly half.As the weather eased off Coalville came more into the game and took the lead with their first forage into Newark's 22,Matt Chamberlain crashing over after a series of pick & drive from the forwards,Will Keeling added the conversion. The home sides responce was quick with Coalville once again on the back foot for the next 10 mins but their defence stood strong until a penalty awarded for offside gave the hosts a shot at the posts,Cox hit the post with the kick but as the ball came back into play Coalville knocked on,from the scrum Hunter-Shaw went over to the left of the posts,Cox added the extra's to level the score's at 7-7.Both defence's on top for the next quarter like two boxer's looking for a knock out punch, five minute's before the interval the hosts were awarded a penalty on half way much to the visitors dismay and were marched back a further 10 metre's for back chatting allowing Cox to stroke the penalty over for a 10-7 lead.Change for Coalville Wallace on for Rumming,From the restart Coalville regained the ball to set up some 15 phase's in the Newark 22 but a knock on brought the half to a close.
Coalville with the wind behind them set about the Newark defence with gusto breaking through on numerous occassions only to be held up when the scores looked good.Another change for the away side as Jake Moretta replaced Flanagan, all Coalville at this stage as frustration crept into the home side after seeing very little ball in hand giving away a few penalties,Keeling levelled the score's from one of these on 70 mins.Rumming back on for the visitors in the dying minutes as Coalville pushed for the winning score,a line out on the Newark 5 metre saw the host give away a free kick which Tointon cleverly took quickly to get the back line over in the opposite corner as Zak Fellows powered his way over to dot down, the conversion was just wide.Newark kicked short from the restart to claim the ball, recycling to set centre Waqalevu away, but a great tackle from Jack Wickwar stopped him in his tracks only to be penalized for a high tackle, the penalty was said to be the last play as Cox's attempt to get as close to the Coalville line as possible failed misserably kicking the ball dead instead giving Coalville a memorable victory by 15pts to 10.
A spokesman for Coalville said after the match,``not many teams will come here and win,we soaked up all their plays and came away with a great result and we had a number of changes from the previous game too but everyone deserves the man of the match award today".
Coalville play Ashbourne at home on October 5th ko 3pm next.
